May 16 - The U.S. Supreme Court rules that even though the manufacturing of liquor is illegal, all bootleggers must pay income tax.
May 20 - Amelia Earhart becomes the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
September 10 - An American meat packing plant announces that it has perfected a frankfurter with a zipper.
September 29 - Telephone service begins between the U.S. and Mexico.
October 6 - The first talking feature film, "The Jazz Singer," is shown in New York City.
November 12 - The Holland Tunnel in New York City is opened.
November 22 - The first snowmobile patent is granted to Carl Eliason of Sayner, Wisconsin.
December 2 - Henry Ford unveils his Model A, successor to the Model T.
